AWARDS & ACHEIVEMENTS
TELECOM ART AWARDS - 1999
My collage piece entitled 'Community Heart Grows....' was selected one of the Top 20 finalists for the Telecom Art Award for the Wairarapa region. Karlene is my full name, Barrington my previous married name.
It did not go on to win to be selected for the Wairarapa White Pages cover, but it was a great personal achievement for me to make it to the top 20.

'COMMUNITY HEART GROWS....'
Classic collage technique of ripping up pieces of coloured paper and gluing to create a picture.
This piece depicts the Wairarapa region as I see it. Blue skies, snow capped mountains, down to the green plains, and out to the coast.
Paua effect wrapping paper used to add a touch of kiwiana on a heart of unfurling fronds.
CAPTAIN ROBERT KENNETH NICOL
I started in my NZDF Archives Enquiries Officer role researching information on Capt Nicol for a memorial that was to take place on Trentham Military Camp where I work.
My contribution resulted in an invitation from the President of the Assyrian Levies Assn to attend the ceremony.
I got so engrossed in learning about Capt Nicol and his sacrifice that I created a canvas collage piece featuring him.
This was presented to his family members at the ceremony and a few weeks later I received a letter from his nephew saying that it would be an heirloom to be passed down through the family.
"I'm still overwhelmed by your kindness. I couldn't express this properly at the time. Yet you have created a memento that I shall cherish all my days, which will be passed on and valued as a family heirloom"
"Meanwhile, know your work of art/love has captivated my family & friends. We are all humbled by your gracious act"
